Can something that was designed to kill and hurt others every be forgiven? Especially if it liked doing so?
Haruaki has a bad life. His dad keeps sending him magical objects. Thankfully he’s resistant or even immune to being cursed, and any effects from hanging around them, but still it’s not fun and games. One day he gets a massive metallic cube. Prodding it he hears a voice, and decides just to keep it in storage. Unfortunately it doesn’t stop there.
That cube is actually a magical torture device, and it manifests a human shape. It’s called Fear, and it came to him in order to change from a thing that enjoyed hearing the screams of others into a normal person. Haruaki takes her under his wing, and starts to teach her human life as the power of her sin slowly dissipates as she stays in his house. But it’s not going to be easy, because others are hunting her too. And she can slip back into her old ways easily…
Cube x Cursed x Curiosity is based on a light novel, and has been adapted to a manga as well as an anime. It’s..well sort of disconcerting. The subject matter sounds dark and sinister, but it’s done in a typical moe style with plenty of ecchi moments. Occasionally it gets serious, and it’s in the serious moments in shines. The thing is, Fear is something that’s very rare in anime; she’s a repentant sinner, and much of the plot in the first volumes of the manga is about protecting her from those who want to judge and kill her. It also doesn’t soft-pedal Fear’s sin either, for when she loses control and reverts to her former self she becomes terrifying. Her reactions are really true to anyone who wants to repent from sin; a desire to, hatred and despair when she backslides, and not ever knowing if she can break the curse that’s inside of her. Her sins were real, too; she was used as a device to torture others, and she liked it until one day she found she had a human manifestation. Even the nature of the change isn’t easy, for it could take decades before all the negative energy is leeched out of her.
It has a LOT of potential, but the ecchi nature of it is hard to overlook. Salty language and nudity are common, as well as violence and psychotic enemies. I can’t help but be interested in how Fear will change over time, and how her redemption will go. Kind of NC-17 though, so it’s not for everyone. You have to admit though, the idea of the Lament Configuration as a cute anime girl who wants to change is an unusual premise to say the least.
